Syroco wood is a molded wood pulp composite that looks like carved wood. The wood pulp is mixed with flour and other materials to make it stronger, and then the composite can be molded into desired shapes. Syroco wood was created in 1890 by Adolph Holstein, a New York immigrant, and was the mainstay of the Syracuse Ornamental Company's production through the 1940s. Syroco wood was a dominating presence in mid-century interior design.
